Sébastien A. Krier

Séb is a Senior Technology Policy Researcher at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center. He previously advised public and private organisations on policy, regulation, and strategies that maximise the benefits of AI, while minimising potential risks. Séb was recently appointed to the JCRT’s Power and Accountability committee, working with the trust to ensure institutions are responsive and accountable to wider society and aligned with the long-term public interest. He is also a Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts and sits on various technical and advisory boards.

In 2018, Séb become Head of Regulation at the Office for Artificial Intelligence, a government joint-unit responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of the United Kingdom’s AI strategy. His former role involved designing policies to address novel issues such as the oversight of automated decision-making systems and the responsible design of AI solutions. He helped lead a comprehensive review of AI in the public sector and published the world’s first guide to using machine learning in the public sector. During his time in Government, he represented the UK at various multilateral organisations such as the EU Commission and Digital Nations, and advised a number of foreign delegations, companies, regulators, and NGOs.

In a previous life, Séb qualified as a lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, specialising in public international law, human rights, and investor-state disputes on cross-border investments. He studied Law at King’s College London and obtained an MPA from UCL in 2018. Outside of work, he enjoys crate-digging and producing electronic music.

Setting regulatory boundaries and providing incentives to protect the socio-economic fabric of societies while also creating certainty for businesses.

Helping policymakers take advantage of the benefits of automation in their operations, whilst ensuring the right level of accountability, oversight, and upskilling.

Advising a leading technology company on an AI governance and ethics strategy, working directly with directors. Drafted responses to European and UK consultations on AI and data. Building internal governance boards, algorithmic impact assessments, and commissioning research projects focused on AI safety, corporate governance, the future of work, and third party auditing of algorithms.
